A friend holds out her hand, and two stones sit side by side on one band, almost leaning toward each other. "It's a toi et moi," she says. If that is the first time you have heard the phrase, you are in good company, because thousands of people in the UK search for it every month.
A toi et moi ring pairs two stones on a single band, and the name means "you and me" in French. At Manna Jewellers in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, we can design one around your own stones through our bespoke jewellery service, and you can compare ready-made styles in our engagement rings collection. Here is what the style means, where it came from and how to choose one that suits your hands.
A toi et moi ring sets two stones side by side on one band, and each stone stands for one person.
The best-known origin story is Napoleon's 1796 gift to Joséphine, a sapphire and a diamond.
Diamond with sapphire, emerald or pearl are the pairings people ask for most.
Pair stones of similar hardness so the harder one doesn't scratch the softer one.
Plan for the wedding band early, because a toi et moi ring sits wider than a solitaire.
Two old rings can often supply both stones through remodelling.
A new gold or platinum ring should carry a hallmark.
The toi et moi meaning sits in the name. "Toi et moi" is "you and me", and the two stones are meant as equals, one for each person. A solitaire puts one stone in charge. This style gives two stones the same weight on the finger.
Plenty of people read it in other ways. Some choose two birthstones, one for each partner. Others pair a diamond with a colour that matters to them. The two stones can just as easily stand for two sisters, or a parent and child, so the toi et moi ring meaning is whatever you decide it is.

The story most jewellers tell starts in 1796, when Napoleon Bonaparte gave Joséphine de Beauharnais a ring with a pear-shaped diamond and a pear-shaped sapphire, according to Sotheby's. Victorian jewellers added coloured gemstones and more elaborate settings. Art Deco makers then pushed the idea towards sharper, more geometric contrasts.
Most people start with a diamond and add a second stone to bring personality. These are the combinations we are asked about most often.

Pairing |
The look |
Worth knowing |
|
Diamond and sapphire |
Classic, close to Napoleon's original |
Both are hard, so it copes well with daily wear |
|
Diamond and emerald |
Fresh green against white sparkle |
Emerald is often oil-treated and can chip, so ask for a protective setting |
|
Diamond and pearl |
A soft glow next to bright sparkle |
Pearl is soft, so leave a small gap and take the ring off for washing up |
|
Two diamonds, different shapes |
Pear with round, or oval with emerald cut |
The easiest pairing to wear every day |
|
Two birthstones |
Personal to each partner |
Check each stone's hardness first. Our birthstones by month guide lists them |
If you like how green and purple look together, our amethyst and emerald vintage dress ring shows the contrast in 18ct white gold. It is a halo rather than a toi et moi, but the colours give you an idea.
Hardness matters more here than in a solitaire, because the two stones sit close and can touch. A diamond next to a pearl needs a small gap or the pearl will pay for it.

A solitaire has one focus, and a three-stone ring has a centre stone with two partners on either side. A toi et moi ring has no centre. It reads as two equals, which suits couples who don't want one person's stone to lead.
It also sits wider across the finger. That changes how it looks with other jewellery, which is why the wedding band question comes up early.
Most people end up with one of three options. A curved or shaped wedding band can wrap around the two stones. A plain straight band can sit just beside the ring with a small gap. Or you can wear the rings on different hands.
Try a few bands on with the toi et moi ring before you commit, because a band that suits a solitaire may leave an awkward space here. Our guide to wearing a wedding ring and engagement ring covers order and finger.
Yes, with the right setting. Two raised stones can catch on sleeves and hair, so a lower setting, such as a bezel, is kinder if your hands are busy. Stones set across the finger sit differently from a single centre stone, and a wider head makes sizing a little fussier, so check your size with our finger size guide first.
A yearly check of the claws is a sensible habit. Two stones means two sets of claws to look after.

You don't have to start from scratch. If you have two old rings, you may be able to reuse the stones from each in a new design. Our jewellery remodelling service assesses your stones and gold, then designs a new piece around them, and the page quotes typically four to six weeks. Not every stone suits reuse, so we look at them first.
If you are starting fresh, the bespoke route runs from sketch to CAD model to casting, stone setting and hand-finishing in our Jewellery Quarter workshop. A lab-grown stone can sit beside a natural gemstone, and our lab-grown diamond guide explains the difference.
Expert tip: A new toi et moi ring in gold or platinum should carry a hallmark. Under the Hallmarking Act 1973, gold over 1 gram and platinum over 0.5 grams must be hallmarked, and selling without one is an offence, according to the BJA hallmarking law page. Ask to see the mark on yours. We will talk you through it at the workshop.
Toi et moi is French for "you and me". On a ring it describes two stones set side by side, one for each person. The toi et moi meaning is the same whether the stones are diamonds or a mix of gems.
Often, yes. A jeweller can assess the stones from both rings and reset them together on one band. Not every stone is suitable, so the assessment comes first. We offer this through our remodelling service.
Diamond with sapphire is the classic choice and suits daily wear. Diamond with emerald looks fresh but needs a protective setting. Pearl is lovely and soft, so it needs more care. Pairing stones of similar hardness is the safest route.
Yes. A curved band can wrap around the stones, a straight band can sit beside them with a small gap, or you can wear them on different hands. Try bands on with the ring before you buy one.
It can be, with the right setting. A lower setting snags less, and hard stones like diamond and sapphire cope best. A wider head means a yearly claw check is worth doing.
