On the left a three-stone ring where the prongs have worn away, On the right the repaired ring.
Your ring setting plays a crucial role in protecting and securing the precious stones in your ring. Over time, everyday wear can cause settings to loosen or wear down, which is why regular checks and timely repairs are so important.
Claws, also known as prongs, are the small metal arms that hold a gemstone in place within a ring setting. These come in different shapes, but they are designed to gently grip the stone and keep it secure while allowing light to pass through, which helps the stone sparkle. Prongs, made from natural materials, can wear down over time due to daily wear, knocks, and general use. When this happens, they may need to be re-tipped or rebuilt to ensure the stone remains safe.

There are several common types of ring settings, each offering a different look and level of protection:
Claw (Prong) Setting
This is one of the most popular styles, where multiple prongs hold the gemstone in place. It allows maximum light to enter the stone, enhancing its brilliance.
Bezel Setting
In this setting, a metal rim surrounds the entire stone. It provides excellent protection and is ideal for people with active lifestyles.
Channel Setting
Often used for wedding bands, this style features smaller stones set in a channel between two strips of metal, creating a smooth and secure finish.
Pavé Setting
Small diamonds are set closely together with tiny beads of metal holding them in place, giving the appearance of a surface covered in sparkle.
The metal used for the ring setting also affects the strength and durability of the prongs.
9ct Gold
9ct gold is commonly used in jewellery because it is durable and more resistant to scratches than higher gold purities. The additional alloy metals make it harder, which can help prongs maintain their shape during everyday wear.
18ct Gold
18ct gold contains a higher percentage of pure gold, giving it a richer colour and more luxurious feel. However, because it is softer than 9ct gold, prongs may wear slightly faster over time and can require maintenance sooner.
Platinum
Platinum is widely considered the strongest and most secure metal for gemstone settings. Rather than wearing away like gold can over many years, platinum tends to displace or bend slightly while still holding the stone in place. This makes it particularly popular for engagement rings and settings that need long-term durability.
It’s a good idea to check your ring’s prongs regularly. Look closely to see if any claws appear thinner, bent, or uneven. A common sign of a worn or lifted claw is your ring catching on clothing, fabrics, or hair. If the claws snag on knitwear or towels, this can indicate that a prong has lifted away from the stone.
You can also gently run your finger around the setting to feel for any sharp or raised claws. Another simple check is to lightly tap the ring near your ear — if you hear a faint rattling sound, the stone may be loose within the setting.
If you suspect your stone is coming loose, it’s best to stop wearing the ring straight away to prevent the stone from falling out. Store it somewhere safe and have it inspected as soon as possible.
At Manna Jewellers, we can professionally check your ring setting, inspect the claws, and carry out any necessary repairs. Whether the claws need tightening, re-tipping, or rebuilding, our team can help ensure your stone is secure and your ring is safe to wear again.
