The History of Wedding Rings – A Timeless Tradition
Wedding rings are a symbol of love and unity, but have you ever wondered where the tradition began? At Manna Jewellers, located in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter, we not only create beautiful wedding rings — we also honour the rich history behind them.
The tradition of exchanging rings dates back over 5,000 years to ancient Egypt, where couples wore rings made of braided hemp or reeds as a symbol of eternal love. The circle, with no beginning or end, represented infinity.
The ancient Romans adopted the tradition, popularising the use of metal rings. They believed the 'vena amoris' (vein of love) ran directly from the fourth finger of the left hand to the heart — a belief that’s still reflected in the modern-day placement of the wedding ring.
In medieval Europe, wedding rings were often engraved or set with gemstones. By the Renaissance, the exchange of rings became a central part of Christian marriage ceremonies, with gold becoming the preferred metal for its purity and value.
Today, gold, platinum, and diamond wedding bands are popular choices for couples worldwide. From simple bands to bespoke wedding rings, each piece carries centuries of tradition and meaning. Rings come in many styles; eternity rings or rings with stones are quite popular.
