Some of the most meaningful words ever written fit inside a ring. A date. A name. Three words. A private joke only two people will ever understand. Ring engraving turns a piece of jewellery into something else entirely, a keeper of something personal, a reminder worn every single day.
It is one of the oldest forms of personalisation in jewellery. Medieval couples exchanged engraved rings called posie rings, inscribed with short rhymes or phrases. The tradition has never really gone away, and it has never felt more relevant than now, when people want the things they wear actually to mean something.
If you are based in Birmingham and looking for a jeweller who can engrave a ring with care and precision, our jewellery engraving service at Manna Jewellers is available in the Jewellery Quarter. Bring the ring in, tell us what you want, and we will advise on what works for your particular piece.
Ring engraving adds a personal inscription, date, name, symbol or message to a ring.
Most engraving is placed on the inside of the band, hidden from view.
Standard UK pricing for ring engraving typically runs from £25 to £100, depending on the method, metal and character count.
Most plain bands can be engraved. Very narrow bands, eternity rings and some stone-set rings may have limitations.
Engraving should always be done after any resizing, as resizing can distort or remove an inscription.
Once engraved, the inscription is permanent. Check the wording carefully before you confirm.
Ring engraving is the process of inscribing a message, design, initials, date or symbol onto a ring. The inscription is usually placed on the inner surface of the band, where it sits against the skin and remains private.
The practice dates back centuries. In medieval France and England, engraved rings known as posy rings were given as tokens of friendship and love. The word "posie" comes from poetry, and the inscriptions were short rhyming phrases, often placed inside so the words would rest against the wearer's skin.
Today, the tradition continues, though the messages have evolved. Modern ring engraving ranges from wedding dates and initials to song lyrics, coordinates, heartbeats, emojis, and split sayings across two matching bands.
A skilled engraver cuts the inscription directly into the metal using specialist tools. The result has a slightly irregular, organic quality that machine engraving does not replicate. Hand engraving is well-suited to decorative flourishes, script fonts and detailed motifs. It takes more time and costs more than machine methods.
A computer-guided machine cuts the letters into the ring. The result is clean, consistent and precise. Machine engraving is the most widely available option and suits most ring inscriptions, particularly those with block or standard script lettering.
A concentrated laser removes surface material to create the inscription. Laser engraving is extremely precise and can achieve very fine detail, including curved text, small symbols and even fingerprint patterns. It is a shallow process and does not weaken the ring. Many jewellers use laser engraving for detailed or complex requests.

Choosing what to engrave is often the hardest part. Here are some of the most popular and meaningful options for wedding rings and engagement rings.

Dates. Your wedding date, the date you met, or the date of your engagement. Roman numerals are a popular way to engrave dates without using a long run of numbers.
Initials. Your initials and your partner's, combined or separated by a small symbol such as a plus sign or a heart.
Names. The full name of your partner inside your ring, and yours inside theirs.
Paired phrases. Many couples split a saying across two rings. Classic examples include "to have" and "to hold", or "always" and "forever." The rings only make sense together, mirroring the relationship itself.
Coordinates. The GPS location of where you met, where you got engaged, or where you married. Short enough to fit comfortably inside most bands.
Handwriting. Some jewellers can engrave a message in your own handwriting or your partner's, using a scan of the original. This is a particularly personal choice.
If you are having an engagement ring made through our bespoke jewellery service, the engraving can be planned from the start as part of the design process.
Costs in the UK vary depending on the jeweller, the method used, the metal type and the number of characters. As a general guide:
Basic machine engraving: from £10 to £30
Laser engraving: from £40 to £60
Hand engraving or complex designs: from £60 to £150 and above
Some jewellers price engraving per character. Others charge a flat fee for a set number of characters, with additional charges beyond that limit.
At Manna Jewellers, we assess each piece individually before quoting. The cost of engraving a fine platinum band with a detailed script font is different from engraving a standard gold wedding band in block capitals. Bring the ring in, and we will give you an honest quote before any work begins.
Most plain wedding bands and engagement rings with a plain shank can be engraved without issue. There are, however, some limitations worth knowing.
Very narrow bands are difficult to engrave clearly. If the band is less than around 2mm wide, the characters may be too small to read legibly. A jeweller will tell you upfront if this applies to your ring.
Full eternity rings present a practical problem. Because stones run all the way around the inside and outside of the band, there is no clear surface available for an inscription.
Certain metals. Titanium and tungsten are exceptionally hard and cannot be engraved using standard methods. Some laser engravers can work with these materials, but not all.
Rings that still need resizing. This is important. Engraving should always be the final step. If a ring is resized after engraving, the inscription can be stretched, distorted or partially removed. If your ring needs resizing, do that first, then engrave.
Plated Metals: Plated metals should not be engraved, as the process can remove the plating and damage the ring.
Over Existing Hallmarks: Engravers usually avoid the inside area where the metal quality (e.g., 14k) or maker's mark is already stamped.
The process is straightforward. Here is what typically happens:
You bring the ring to the jeweller and discuss the inscription, including the wording, font and placement.
The jeweller checks the ring to confirm it can be engraved and advises on any limitations.
You confirm the exact wording. Check this very carefully, including spellings and punctuation, because engraving is permanent.
The work is usually carried out within a few days for standard engravings.
You collect the ring and check the inscription before leaving.
One practical note: if you need the ring engraved before a specific date, such as a wedding or birthday, tell the jeweller when you book so they can plan accordingly.
Most plain gold, silver and platinum rings can be engraved. Very narrow bands, full eternity rings, and titanium and tungsten rings may not be suitable. A jeweller can assess your specific ring before you commit.
It depends on your ring size. Most standard rings comfortably accommodate 15 to 25 characters. Men's rings, which tend to be wider, often have room for slightly more. Your jeweller will confirm the limit for your specific band.
No. Laser engraving is shallow and does not affect the metal's structural integrity. Machine and hand engraving also remove minimal material. The ring remains just as strong after engraving.
Technically, yes, through polishing and refinishing, though this is not always straightforward and may affect the ring's finish. It is far better to treat the engraving as permanent and check the wording very carefully before confirming.
Either is fine. Some couples engrave beforehand as a surprise. Others wait until after the wedding and choose the inscription together. There is no rule. What matters is that the wording feels right.
