Hatton Garden for Jewellery in London: The Complete Guide to London's Famous Jewellery Quarter

July 01, 2026 9 min read

hatton garden jewellery london

If you have ever searched for an engagement ring, a wedding ring, or a piece of bespoke jewellery in the UK, the name Hatton Garden has almost certainly come up. It is London's most famous jewellery district, and its reputation stretches well beyond the capital.

But Hatton Garden is not just a place to browse. It is a working jewellery quarter, home to diamond dealers, goldsmiths, repair workshops, independent valuers, and second-hand jewellery specialists, all concentrated in a small area of central London. Knowing what is actually there and what to expect when you visit makes the experience significantly more productive.

This guide covers everything: the history, the services available, what to look for in Hatton Garden wedding rings and engagement rings, how repairs and valuations work, and what to do if you want the same quality and expertise closer to home, outside London.

Quick takeaways

  • Hatton Garden is London's principal jewellery quarter, located in Holborn, EC1N.

  • The area has over 300 jewellery businesses and more than 90 shops.

  • Services available include engagement rings, wedding rings, bespoke jewellery, repairs, valuations, second-hand buying and diamond dealers.

  • Hatton Garden jewellery prices are competitive with high street chains but vary significantly between dealers.

  • The nearest tube stations are Chancery Lane and Farringdon.

  • Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter offers the same range of services, comparable expertise, and over 250 years of jewellery heritage, without the travel or cost of London.

Where is Hatton Garden in London?

Hatton Garden sits in the London Borough of Camden, in the Holborn area of central London. It runs between Clerkenwell to the north and Holborn to the south, bordered roughly by Farringdon Road to the east and Grey's Inn Road to the west.

The area is well served by public transport. Chancery Lane on the Central Line is the closest tube station. Farringdon, on the Elizabeth line, Circle line, and Metropolitan line, is a short walk away and offers good connections across London and beyond. By train, Farringdon and City Thameslink both put you within easy walking distance.

The street itself is less than a mile long. Most of the jewellery shops, workshops and dealers are concentrated on Hatton Garden itself and on the surrounding side streets, including Greville Street, Bleeding Heart Yard and Ely Place.

A brief history of Hatton Garden jewellery

The name Hatton Garden comes from Sir Christopher Hatton, a close adviser to Queen Elizabeth I, who was granted the land and its gardens in 1581. The area remained largely residential until the 19th century, when wealthy merchants moved in, and the diamond trade began to take hold.

In 1807, there were only 11 businesses related to the jewellery, watch and clock trades in Hatton Garden directories. By 1907, there were 264 firms, including 35 silversmiths, 45 jewellery manufacturers and 78 firms related to diamonds.

The boom in the diamond trade followed the discovery of vast diamond deposits in southern Africa in the 1870s and 1880s. London became a global hub for the cutting, trading and selling of diamonds, and Hatton Garden was at the centre of it.

Today, there are over 90 jewellery shops and close to 300 jewellery businesses in the locality, making it the largest jewellery quarter in the country.

The area has not been without incident. The 2015 Hatton Garden Safe Deposit burglary, in which a group of thieves drilled through a vault wall over an Easter weekend, became one of the most reported heists in UK history. It underscored just how much value is concentrated in this small patch of London.

What can you buy in Hatton Garden?

Hatton Garden engagement rings

Hatton Garden is best known, for most visitors, as a destination for engagement rings. The concentration of independent jewellers means the range of styles, stones and settings is far wider than any single department store could offer. Many jewellers design and make rings on-site, which means you are often buying directly from the maker.

Hatton Garden has a particularly strong association with engagement rings, with generations of Londoners purchasing their wedding bands and diamond jewellery from the shops there.

At Manna Jewellers in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, we offer the same direct-from-maker experience. Our  diamond engagement rings and  gemstone engagement rings are designed and hand-finished in our on-site workshop. You are speaking to the people who make the ring, not a showroom sales team.

Wedding rings are the second most common purchase in the district. Plain bands, diamond wedding rings, eternity rings and bespoke wedding bands are all readily available. The competition among dealers means prices are generally lower than those of high street chains.

Manna Jewellers stocks a full range of  plain wedding bands,  diamond wedding bands, and  eternity rings in 9ct and 18ct gold, rose gold, white gold and platinum. Every ring is hand-finished in our Birmingham Jewellery Quarter workshop.

Diamonds are the heartbeat of the district. Loose diamonds, certified stones, diamond rings, pendants and earrings are available from dozens of dealers. Many Hatton Garden jewellers also offer diamond education sessions where you can learn about the 4Cs (cut, colour, clarity, carat) before choosing a stone.

At Manna Jewellers, our  diamond jewellery collection covers rings, pendants and earrings, and our team can guide you through stone selection as part of the buying or bespoke design process. Our  diamond 4Cs guide covers the basics to help you prepare before visiting.

Hatton Garden second-hand jewellery

Pre-owned and estate jewellery is widely available in the district. Many dealers specialise in antique and vintage pieces, particularly Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco jewellery. Prices for second-hand Hatton Garden jewellery vary considerably depending on condition, rarity and provenance.

Manna Jewellers holds a selection of  pre-owned jewellery and  pre-owned watches, and we also buy jewellery if you are looking to sell rather than purchase.

Hatton Garden jewellery services

Hatton Garden jewellery repair

Repair services are available from many workshops in and around Hatton Garden. Ring resizing, stone replacement, clasp repair, rhodium plating, soldering and full restoration are all standard offerings. The depth of technical expertise in the district is one of its genuine strengths.

At Manna Jewellers, our  jewellery repair service in Birmingham covers the same range of work as our Birmingham store. Ring resizing, engraving, claw tightening, replating and full restoration are all carried out in our on-site workshop. We have been doing this for over 40 years.

Hatton Garden jewellery valuation

Independent valuations for insurance, probate and resale purposes are available from several businesses in Hatton Garden. A professional valuation from a qualified gemmologist or valuer gives you a written assessment of a piece's current market replacement value.

Expert tip: The  Institute of Registered Valuers, part of the National Association of Jewellers, maintains a directory of accredited jewellery valuers across the UK. Using an IRV-registered valuer ensures that insurance companies recognise the assessment and adhere to a consistent professional standard, whether you are in London or Birmingham.

Manna Jewellers offers jewellery valuations as part of our buying and selling service. If you are considering selling, we provide an honest assessment before any commitment.

Hatton Garden bespoke jewellery

Bespoke jewellery design is widely available in Hatton Garden, with many makers offering consultation-to-completion services for engagement rings, wedding rings and fine jewellery. The process typically involves a design consultation, CAD renders or wax models, and a production timeline of several weeks.

At Manna Jewellers, our  bespoke jewellery service follows the same process, with one key advantage: our on-site workshop. You meet the jeweller, approve a model, and the ring is made in the same building.

Hatton Garden jewellery markets: what to know about buying in the district

There is no single indoor jewellery market in Hatton Garden in the way that some visitors expect. The district is a street-level shopping experience spread across a cluster of independent shops, showrooms and workshops. Some buildings, like the Hatton Garden Shopping Centre at number 53, house multiple jewellers under one roof.

The best approach when visiting is to treat it as a research trip first. Look at several jewellers before committing to anything. Prices and quality vary significantly between businesses, and the district's reputation does not guarantee every trader is operating to the same standard.

For comparison shopping without the London journey, Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter has the same competitive dynamic. Over 700 businesses operate in the Quarter, covering jewellery retail, manufacturing, repairs and precious metal dealing.

Hatton Garden vs Birmingham Jewellery Quarter: how do they compare?

Both are genuine working jewellery quarters with long histories and real expertise. The differences are practical rather than qualitative.

Tips for visiting Hatton Garden jewellery shops

  • Go on a weekday if possible. Many Hatton Garden jewellers are closed or have reduced hours on Sundays.

  • Bring photo ID. Any jeweller buying gold or diamonds from you will need identification under UK anti-money laundering regulations.

  • Do not buy on your first visit. Walk the street, collect quotes, and compare before committing.

  • Ask to see the certification. For diamonds, ask for a GIA or IGI grading certificate. For gold, check the hallmark.

  • Know your ring size before visiting. It saves time and helps jewellers provide you with an accurate quote for resizing, if needed.

  • Budget for the whole trip. Parking in EC1N is expensive. The cafes and restaurants surrounding Hatton Garden are central London-priced. Factor this into your visit cost.

Frequently asked questions

1. Where is Hatton Garden in London?

Hatton Garden is located in Holborn, in the London Borough of Camden, between Clerkenwell and the City of London. It sits close to Farringdon and Chancery Lane tube stations. The street itself runs roughly north to south, with the majority of jewellery shops, workshops and diamond dealers concentrated along the main street and surrounding side streets, including Greville Street and Ely Place. The postcode is EC1N.

2. What can I find at Hatton Garden jewellery shops?

Hatton Garden jewellery shops offer engagement rings, wedding rings, diamond jewellery, bespoke jewellery, second-hand and antique jewellery, loose diamonds and gemstones, and services such as repairs, resizing, engraving, and valuations. The district is the largest concentration of jewellery retailers in the UK, with over 300 businesses in a small area.

3. Are Hatton Garden engagement rings cheaper than elsewhere?

Hatton Garden engagement rings are generally more competitively priced than high street chains because many jewellers sell direct from their own workshops, removing the retail markup. Prices still vary significantly between dealers, and the quality of the stones and craftsmanship also differs. Visiting several jewellers before buying and asking to see the diamond certification is the most reliable way to ensure you are getting fair value.

4. Can I get a jewellery valuation in Hatton Garden?

Yes. Several independent valuers operate in and around Hatton Garden. An accredited professional should provide a proper jewellery valuation for insurance or probate purposes, ideally one registered with the Institute of Registered Valuers. The same service is available from qualified jewellers in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, including at Manna Jewellers.

5. Is there a jewellery alternative to Hatton Garden outside London?

Yes. Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter is the UK's other major jewellery district and offers the same range of services: engagement rings, wedding rings, bespoke design, repairs, valuations and second-hand buying. It has a longer history than Hatton Garden as a jewellery manufacturing centre and is more accessible for buyers from the Midlands, the North and Wales. Manna Jewellers has been based in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter for over 40 years.
